Preschool #2 | Barushan, Tajikistan
Preschool No. 2 is located in the mountain town of Barushan, Tajikistan, in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast—a remote, marginalized region situated among the Pamir Mountains and some of the world’s highest peaks. One-third of Gorno-Badakhshan’s inhabitants live in poverty, and a large proportion of children are malnourished and lack access to clean drinking water and other basic necessities.
Preschool No. 2, the only preschool in the village, was originally built in 1962 with substandard materials. Over time, the building fell into severe disrepair: sagging walls and ceilings created a dangerous learning environment in this earthquake-prone area, mold crept along damp corners, and the broken wooden outhouses lacked running water. While teachers did their best, they lacked the facilities, training, and resources needed to help students reach their full potential.
Recognizing this urgent need, CAI and its dedicated supporters stepped in. Five years ago, we broke ground on a new Preschool No. 2, with donors immediately joining as Brick Layers to fund the construction of this model school. Despite the challenges of working in such a remote and unstable environment, and the delays caused by limited access to supplies and labor, the dream was kept alive through the steadfast commitment of our community. Today, we are thrilled to announce that the new Preschool No. 2 is complete. The building will soon open its doors to 120 eager students, offering a safe, healthy, and inspiring place to learn and grow. We hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a virtual event on May 1, 2024 to celebrate this milestone, taking supporters on a tour of the finished school. Read our blog to tour the preschool.
The final result is a school that students, teachers, and families are immensely proud of—made possible only through your generosity. Thank you for believing in the children of Barushan and for sharing your resources to make this vision a reality.
