On March 18, 2026, Central Asia Institute held a special, free webinar featuring Dr. Karim-Aly Kassam, International Professor of Environmental and Indigenous Studies at Cornell University, as he illuminates the cultural and ecological lenses of Nowruz through a talk on “Nav’ruz and the Rhythms of Life.”
Nav’ruz, meaning new day, marks the vernal equinox and the start of the new year in many cultures, particularly in the mountainous areas where CAI works in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. It is also the arrival of Spring. Therefore, it is a time of hope for revitalization of life generally and food security specifically. Dr. Kassam will explore: How do we understand Nav’ruz in the context of the second quarter of the twenty-first century as we face seemingly endless challenges? How does this universally human celebration invigorate hope in tumultuous times?
Our conversation also spotlighted how CAI’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Programs across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan support women who are building resilient livelihoods rooted in food systems, cultural knowledge, and community strength.
New in 2026: Registrants gained exclusive access to our all-new digital Nowruz Cookbook, which features traditional dishes prepared for the holiday and treasured Nowruz memories from our in-country partners.
