Alice Thomas, CAI Executive Director, Travels to Tajikistan

This August, our executive director, Alice Thomas, visited Tajikistan, where Central Asia Institute has supported education and women’s economic empowerment since 2012.

Alice traveled 12 hours from Dushanbe, the nation’s capital, to Khorog, the remote capital of the region of Gorno-Badakhshan, where CAI-Tajikistan is headquartered. From there, she and CAI-Tajikistan director Mahbuba Quorbonalieva visited several schools under renovation and others recently completed with CAI’s support. These efforts are creating safe, supportive learning spaces for the children of Gorno-Badakhshan. Alice also met with local graduates of CAI’s women’s livelihoods programs, who are now using newly honed skills to generate income, support their families, and uplift their communities.
