A School at Her Doorstep: Mida’s Journey to Educate Her Village

In the remote village of Kazdan, tucked high in the rugged mountains of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, education has long been out of reach for most children. The nearest public school is far away, and with few teachers available, many children have grown up never learning to read or write.

For years, Mida Gul watched this happen in silence. A trained educator from Zebak District, she completed her studies at the Teacher Training Institute and briefly taught English in 2019. But soon after, opportunities disappeared.

At home, Mida lived in a large extended household of 30 family members, including her husband, two children, in-laws, and other relatives. Life became even more difficult after the Taliban takeover in 2021. When her husband lost his job, Mida became responsible for supporting the entire household. At the same time, she watched the children of her village lose precious years of education.

Support finally arrived when Shining Star Educational Organization of Afghanistan, with the support of Central Asia Institute, opened a community-based primary school in Kazdan. The initiative brought learning within reach for local children—and gave Mida the chance to return to teaching.

As a community-based educator, Mida filled a critical gap in her village’s schooling system. The role has not only provided income for her family but has also renewed her confidence and sense of purpose. Through several training programs, Mida strengthened her teaching skills and grew both personally and professionally.

Her efforts have had a deep impact on her family and her community. Children now attend classes regularly, and parents have new hope for their children’s futures. Mida’s husband reflects proudly: “We had accepted that our children would grow up without learning. But Mida changed everything. She brought school to our door.” Another parent shares: She teaches our daughters with love and respect. Now, my little girl wants to be a teacher like Mida.”

Through her work, Mida has become financially independent, earned the respect of her community, and helped educate dozens of children. She now serves as a role model for other women in her village, showing what is possible when education and opportunity come together.

“During these four years, I participated in many training courses and educational programs,” Mida says. “These helped me grow, both in knowledge and confidence. Today, I feel I can guide and inspire others. I’m deeply thankful for this support and this program for providing me this chance to learn, grow, and stand on my own. If this program ends tomorrow, I won’t stop—I’ll continue teaching wherever I can. I now believe that I can build my life through my own effort.”

Mida’s story shows how access to education and opportunity can transform not only one woman’s life, but also the future of an entire community.
