When the alarm goes off at 5am, it can be hard to push yourself to get out of bed, to pull on your running shoes and head out the door. This year, Central Asia Institute can help you find that extra motivation by combining fitness with fundraising for girls’ education. Through our collaboration with the Rock n Roll Marathon Series and the San Francisco Marathon, we’re helping two different sets of hard workers accomplish their goals. For many, committing to a charity race can give them the extra strength to run, ride, or ski across the finish line, even when it seems impossible.
“Knowing I was skiing for more than myself gave me the willpower to drag my skis across the finish line,” says Katie Smith, who completed a 50-kilometer skate ski race for HER, CAI’s scholarship program. Knowing that your actions are having an impact on others can provide motivation to accomplish incredible feats.
Races like the 2017 Rock n Roll Marathon Series and the San Francisco Marathon allow participants to run for a cause. The Rock n Roll includes 10ks, half marathons, and full marathons from March through November in locations all across the U.S., from Washington D.C. to Dallas, Chicago to St. Louis, Denver and Seattle to Raleigh and Mexico City. In addition to the Rock n Roll, you can also sign up for the San Francisco Marathon on July 23. All of these options provide opportunities for you to push yourself to meet your own goals while helping someone else reach their goals for an education.
Participants with fundraising goals of $750 and up will receive a free race bib, as well as all the support and encouragement CAI can provide. This includes tips for training and fundraising to make your endeavor as successful as possible. If there isn’t a race near you or big events just aren’t your style, you can also set up a personalized fundraising page and do a sponsored run of your own. Regardless of the way you choose to participate, your efforts will make a difference to countless students overseas.
As you’re working hard to prepare for your race, somewhere across the world there’s a girl working hard to open up opportunities in her life by getting an education. Maybe she’s the only one in her family with the ability to read and stays up at night to study by candlelight after they’ve gone to bed. Maybe she gets up extra early in the morning so she can feed and tend to her family’s livestock and make breakfast for her family before walking the four miles to get to school.
As you’re pulling on running shoes, somewhere across the world there’s a girl pulling on worn boots. As you’re running determinedly down the sidewalk or through the woods, she’s walking determinedly to a school that will bring her hope for a better future. Each stride you take and each dollar you raise will help pay for her school supplies, her teacher’s salary, or her scholarship to college.
Two sets of feet move resolutely towards their goals. Two sets of footprints are left behind, on the sidewalk of a city and in the dirt of a long road to school. The sound of two sets of footsteps echo each other. The difference is, her footsteps are counting on yours.
As you’re training for a charity race, working hard and pushing yourself, it helps to remember those girls across the world who are pushing themselves to have a future through education. Remembering them and knowing that they’re depending on you can give you the motivation to cross the finish line.
