Pickling Dreams and Self-Reliance: Naik’s Story

In the remote mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, where apricot trees line terraced hillsides and mulberries ripen in the summer heat, a 52-year-old woman is quietly changing what it means to be self-reliant.

Her name is Naik, and she is pickling more than fruit — she is pickling dreams.

For years, Naik carried the weight of a family of ten on her shoulders with few options and a limited income. Putting food on the table was a daily struggle. She wanted to do more for her family and her community but lacked the tools to get there.

That began to change when the Central Asia Institute and Moawin Foundation launched a business planning and fruit dehydration training in Gilgit. Eager to write her own future, Naik applied without hesitation.

The effect was almost instant.

Before the training, she had never considered the full range of ways to prepare and market organic products. Within weeks, she was learning to dry apricots and mulberries, craft jams from seasonal fruits, prepare mixed pickles, and apply food handling and small business management strategies to her daily work. Knowledge that had once felt out of reach became practical, actionable, and hers.

She named her business Nani’s Achaar — and she has not looked back.

“I increased my confidence, which motivated me to learn new things,” Naik shared. “I also learned that age is not a barrier to learning and personal growth. Today, I feel proud of the knowledge and skills I have gained.”

Her pride is well-earned. Naik went from a one-woman operation to a small business leader, now selling mixed pickles in her local market and steadily expanding her reach. She is quick to credit her daughter-in-law, who works alongside her at every step — her encouragement and dedication have been as essential to Nani’s Achaar as the recipes themselves.

Naik’s story is proof that with determination, the right skills, and meaningful support, women can reshape their own futures — at any age. In Gilgit and beyond, she is the living evidence that a single training, a jar of pickles, and an unshakable resolve can be the beginning of something much larger.
