A portal is a gateway to another place, physically and metaphorically, which is why a photo essay may show more than only words alone could.
Webster’s Dictionary defines it this way:
Portal: a doorway, gate, or other entrance, especially a large and elaborate one.
Portal, a doorway, gate, or other entrance, esp. a large and elaborate one.
Like photography itself, portals offer a look at something we wouldn’t otherwise see – whether it’s a peek through a keyhole or a glance out the window.
And by looking, we learn.
Through the portal of education we change our understanding of the world.
